What Paths Are Open For Those Leaving School In The Modern Age?
Recently, there have been enormous changes to the higher education sector:
• University tuition fees for UK students, once non-existent, now stand at a staggering £9,000p.a.;
• Visa restrictions for overseas students have tightened considerably, so travelling to the UK to study is not quite as easy as it once was;
• The UK Government has thrown open the doors to Univesities, making them less selective and arguably weakening the value of the degrees they award.
The status around the world of a genuinely accredited British qualification remains high; the market is however more diffuse, with more adaptable providers challenging the status of universities, and students becoming more selective. Naturally, in the light of these changes, many young people, rather than automatically choose university, are examining a range of options:
These options include:
• Knuckle down and learn a practical trade through the classic apprenticeship;
• Enrol in a vocational training course;
• Get working, get earning - doesn't matter where;
• Go to university immediately upon leaving school;
• Do a gap year first, then go to uni;
• Enter the workforce with the intention of studying further down the line, when you have more idea of what you need to adfvance your career.
Across your working life a degree is said to net you around 100k more than those without but if a university education is also a reflection of innate intellect, surely someone with the extra intellect will consider these options most carefully ... and be able to succeed even if they need to embark on unexpected or modified paths.
The last 15 years have elucidated one fact above all others: there are multiple different paths of study that lead to a fully-accredited qualification - university is not the only option. The problem many people find with university is that you actually have to go there: 'up sticks' to a completely different place, leaving family and friends behind. It can be exciting when you're young and free, but also daunting, and if you have a family being apart from them can be distressing.
If you have come to a time in your life when you know exactly what you want to study, and you don't want the upheaval and financial pressure of moving to a university, a course of web-based distance learning is probably your best bet
Browse around the online courses out there; far cheaper, they offer flexible learning with an accredited qualification at the end. And studying using distance learning methods show that you have the initiative to succeed in today's market. Without racking up enormous debts.
