Where Do I Find the Criteria for Approved Providers of My Counselor State Board? - Question Two
I previously addressed the question, "What are the CE requirements for my license?", in relation to licensed counselors. Now what will be addressed is, "How do I find out which CE providers are pre-approved by my state board?", again specifically as it applies to licensed counselors. In answering this question you will be able to determine where to go to fulfill your CE requirements. Once you have gained understanding on what your personal requirements are for continuing education, the next piece of the puzzle is what does your board require from the providers of the CE courses.
That which is acceptable as approved continuing education will vary among state boards (as it pertains to independent providers). Before you start your search for an approved provider, you will need to know what your state board accepts. Preceding the explanation of where this information can be found, let's take a peek at how the state boards' requirements for providers differ.
There are some states where the board requires the CE provider to apply for approval from them specifically. This means that the CE provider will have a specific provider number issued by that state board. For example, for Professional Counselors in Ohio, the provider you use must be approved by the The Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board of Ohio and have been issued an RCX#. If your state board is similar in their requirements, look for the unique provider number issued by your state board with each CE provider you research.
Other counselor state boards accept the approvals from certain national organizations. For example, in Minnesota, a Professional Counselor can earn CE from a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) approved provider. So, those providers who have earned national approval, such as from the NBCC, can provide CE to those licensed in states that acknowledge such national approval, like Minnesota.
Yet another scenario are those states that accept CE from providers who have been approved in another state for the same license type. As an example, Professional Counselors in Colorado can earn continuing education from a provider who has received approval in California from the BBS, since the CA BBS now governs LPCCs. Now you have an understanding of what the states may accept regarding provider approvals, yet, how can you determine what your state board permits?
You will want to begin at your state board's official home page. Look around their home page for a link that will take you to a document on their board's rules, regulations, laws, statutes, etc. In this document you will want to go to the section for continuing education. Here you will read about what your board deems to be acceptable means of continuing education. Those that are licensed as a counselor in Pennsylvania, the section you are looking for is "Pre-approved providers of continuing education courses and programs for professional counselors". This area will tell you which scenario described above your state board falls into (accepting a nationally approved provider, a provider approved in another state, or one that is approved by them only).
Equipped with this information you are now able to start looking for the right online CE provider. This information will make things easier going forward. If the online CE provider you are researching does not have this information readily available on their website, ask for it. If this information is not available go to the next provider.
