Central Michigan Will Cover, San Jose ST. Home Underdog, The Good Doctor, Floyd Rides Philly

September 29, 2006

I'm not saying that it was easy money.

No, I wouldn't go that far. If you've picked your way through thesports gamblingworld long enough and seen some of the cars bookies drive and the pretty girls all theonline sports gamblingsites have hired in recent years, you know that there are no locks or guarantees. Most of us are wrong when we see a sure bet. But when I looked at the Ryder Cup rosters a month ago, I saw names on the American roster that just didn't belong. Sure, Zach Johnson, Brett Wetterich, J.J Henry and Vaughn Taylor are wonderful golfers, but I don't exactly want to put my money behind them when a bunch of fiery Euros are on the other side. Yes, Europe, behind the stellar play of Sergio Garcia and the sympathetic character Darren Clarke, gave the U.S. team, and especially Phil Mickelson, a hefty beating. And I benefited. Call me a trader, but I like to trade in currency not flags.

Now that the golf season is just about over, we can return to what truly matters – football and football. Skunker T. Floyd was swimming in confidence after an amazing weekend. He hung in a luxury box at Candlestick Park and watched his Philadelphia Eagles dismantle the 49ers. Floyd looked back on the weekend with a smile on his face during his weekly press conference. In an amazing act ofsports wageringrestraint, Floyd only bet one game last weekend. He fired on his Eagles giving point and the over, which they covered quite easily.

On the other hand, I didn't show similar restraint. I've decided that I might just be a college guy. After losing a small parlay with Louisville covering over Kansas St. and Iowa not covering against Illinois, I went 3-0 on Saturday with my big win being Syracuse (-7), which beat up Miami-Ohio 34-14. I also took the over in the Cal-Arizona St. (58) and got a 49-21 Cal win. Stanford showed once again how bad they are with Washington St. (-9.5) winning big. Sunday wasn't as enjoyable, though. I won with Floyd's Eagles to cover bet, but lost when I only fired on two of Dr. Bob's three picks.

The Good Doctor was correct on the under in the Indy-Jacksonville game, but led us astray with his under bets in the big number Philly-SF and Seattle-New York Giants games. But I look at the long term with Doctor Bob and his record doesn't lie. Perhaps I'll lean on his college bets this week.

Which brings me to this week's picks. I've always been a fan of staying away from big games. I'll watch them because the SEC, as shown on Thursday night with Auburn and South Carolina, is the best college football conference, but I will lean on the SEC in non-conference contests.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN at KENTUCKY (-8)

Before you follow my lead and fire on this game remember that if you are going to bet a team, you have to know the mascot. It's an old rule I learned from the Caddymaster who wasn't named Lou, who's losing at the track.

The Central Michigan Chippewas played Boston College tough in their opener and continue to improve after a loss to Michigan. But the win-loss record of 2-2 doesn't tell this squad's story. The Chippewas are 4-0 against the spread and have covered in 9 of their last 11 games. Kentucky, meanwhile, is coming off a 26-7 loss to Florida, which didn't do much for their mediocre offense. I can see the Chippewas winning, but even if they lose the eight points is a sweet cushion on my sofa.

SAN DIEGO ST. (-2.5) at SAN JOSE ST.

You have to love the WAC. San Jose St. used to be a laugher, but they've already beat Stanford and played a close game with Washington. San Diego State is coming off a lopsided loss to a Utah team that is not a great team. Dr. Bob bet against the Aztecs last week and won. We shouldn't fall in love with a team, but I'm willing to ride this team's inability to go on the road and beat San Jose St., a squad that is 2-1 and still carrying momentum from the Stanford win.
